Instructional observation in today’s schools should serve the purpose to continually improve instructional performance. This kind of evaluation is typically noted as the formative process of teacher evaluations. It is designed to help improve instructional performance by modifying teacher behavior to match expected district performance criteria. The formative process is exclusively designed to focus on instructional improvement.

Observation of classroom activities is by far the most common form of data collection for evaluation. Observations can be conducted on a formal and planned sequence of events or in an informal manner through the drop-in observation. The purpose of the drop-in observation is to provide continual assessment and feedback in regard to instructional performance. The key to the drop-in observation using the TAS handheld PC program is to increase the frequency by which observations occur and to provide teachers with immediate feedback while saving administrative time.
